The Vagus Nerve and Chronic Stress: Why Activation Is Not the Whole Story

The vagus nerve gets a lot of attention. Breathing exercises, humming, cold exposure, and other practices are often described as ways to “activate the vagus nerve” and calm the nervous system.


There is some science behind this. The vagus nerve is an important part of the parasympathetic nervous system and plays a role in functions such as heart rate and digestion. But chronic stress is more complicated than whether the vagus nerve is activated. If someone has been under stress for months or years, a practice that helps them settle for a few minutes may still be useful. It just may not change the larger pattern.


What the Vagus Nerve Does

The vagus nerve carries signals between the brain and organs including the heart, lungs, and digestive tract. It carries information in both directions. At the heart, vagal activity helps slow heart rate. The sympathetic nervous system also plays an important role, especially when the body needs to mobilize. These systems are not just opposite switches. They can change together in more complicated ways.


Stress responses also involve the brain, hormones, breathing, movement, internal body signals, and whatever is happening in the environment. There is no single nerve that turns stress on or off.


Why Slow Breathing Can Help

Slow breathing can be useful. For some people, it decreases physical arousal and creates a little more space internally. Breathing also changes heart-rate patterns, and slow breathing can increase measures associated with cardiac parasympathetic activity.

That does not mean the vagus nerve has been “reset.”


It also does not mean that a higher heart-rate variability number tells us that the whole nervous system is more regulated. Heart-rate variability is affected by breathing, fitness, age, activity, health, medication, and other factors. It can be useful information, but it is not a complete picture of someone's nervous-system state.

Chronic Stress Is More Than a Moment of Activation

Short-term stress helps us respond to what is happening. Attention changes. Energy becomes more available. Heart rate and breathing may shift. Stress hormones are released. When the stress continues, the body has less opportunity to recover.


People may notice:

  • persistent muscle tension

  • changes in sleep

  • irritability

  • fatigue

  • difficulty concentrating

  • feeling overwhelmed more easily

  • difficulty settling after stressful situations


There is no single stress pattern. Some people become restless and highly alert. Others feel tired, withdrawn, or less engaged. Many move between different responses.


This is why chronic stress cannot be explained simply as too much sympathetic activity or too little vagal activity.


When Someone Looks Calm but Does Not Feel Calm

Some people function very well while carrying a lot of internal strain.

They work. They care for other people. They meet expectations. From the outside, they may look calm and capable. Inside, maintaining that steadiness may take a lot of effort.


In Nurturing Resilience, Kathy L. Kain, PhD, and Stephen J. Terrell, PsyD, describe this clinical pattern as a “faux window of tolerance,” a concept I have found useful in understanding how someone can appear steady and capable while carrying significant internal strain.


The broader idea of a “window of tolerance” is also a clinical model rather than a precise biological mechanism. What matters more is the person's actual experience. Someone can look composed and still feel tense, exhausted, disconnected, or easily overwhelmed when demands increase.


What People Sometimes Call Functional Freeze

The phrase functional freeze is sometimes used in somatic therapy to describe someone who continues functioning while feeling physically braced, emotionally muted, disconnected, or depleted.


The term can be useful because it gives language to an experience that may otherwise be hard to describe. I use it as a clinical description, not as a specific autonomic state. Human stress responses are more complex than a simple fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown model.


Why Vagus Nerve Activation Is Not Enough

Breathing exercises and other calming practices can change what is happening in the moment. That can be helpful. But chronic stress may involve an overwhelming workload, caregiving, relationship conflict, chronic pain, health concerns, financial uncertainty, discrimination, or patterns that developed over years.


A breathing exercise does not remove those conditions. That does not make regulation practices useless. It just means they are one part of a larger picture. Sometimes a person needs rest. Sometimes movement helps. Sometimes support is needed. Sometimes the environment itself needs to change. And sometimes it is useful to notice how the body responds while the stress is actually happening.


Where Somatic Practice and Psychotherapy Can Be Useful

Somatic practice and psychotherapy pays attention to what is happening in the moment.


A person may begin to notice:

  • tightening in the jaw or shoulders

  • changes in breathing

  • becoming very still

  • narrowing attention

  • an urge to leave

  • pushing through fatigue

  • quickly accommodating another person


These observations do not tell us exactly what the nervous system is doing. They do tell us something about how the person is responding. Somatic practice and psychotherapy can then look at whether that response fits what is happening now and what other options may be available.


The goal is not to increase vagal activity as much as possible. It is not necessarily to become calm. Sometimes activation is appropriate. Sometimes settling is helpful. Sometimes speaking, moving, setting a limit, or changing the situation makes more sense.


A More Complete View of Regulation

Regulation does not mean staying calm. A healthy stress response includes being able to mobilize when something requires action and recover when the demand has passed.

That depends on far more than one nerve. The vagus nerve is an important part of autonomic physiology.


Slow breathing and similar practices can influence cardiovascular and parasympathetic processes and may help some people settle. But the vagus nerve is not a master switch for stress. And chronic stress cannot be reduced to a problem of vagal activation.

The more useful question is often not:

How do I activate my vagus nerve?

It may be: What is my body responding to, and what does this situation actually require?
